How to Use the Virtual Scientific Calculator Online

How to Use the Virtual Scientific Calculator Online

The GATE 2016 Organizing Institute IISC Bangalore has deliberately announced its Important Dates for the upcoming Engineers pride GATE 2016 Online Exams. Apart from the few new changes with the exams, the organizing institute also comes forward to provide few important and most anticipated changes indeed.

One of the most important changes done with the exams is that, there is no more usage of the normal scientific calculator. Yes, the candidates will be provided the virtual online calculator for the GATE 2016 examinations.

This is officially declared by the GATE organizing institute as follows.

Can I use a physical calculator during the examination?

NO. During the online GATE 2016 examination, all candidates will be provided with an online scientific calculator which has to be used to answer the questions. No physical calculator will be allowed inside the examination hall. The same applies to mobile phones. GATE 2016 will not provide any storage space at examination locations for such objects. If a candidate brings personal belongings including mobile phones, those will have to be kept outside the examination hall at the candidate’s risk.

Don’t worry guys, before the GATE 2016 Examination we will give you the exact model of the Online Calculator and how will it look like, and what are the functions enabled with the virtual calculator and more details.

Also, we make sure you to aware of “How to Use the Virtual Scientific Calci Online” in the GATE 2016. Stay updated!

Gate 2016 Changes

New in Gate 2016

  • Changes in Syllabus of papers.
  • There are 23 papers in total in GATE 2016 with the introduction of new paper Petroleum Engineering (PE). Candidates are required to choose any 1 paper out of 23. Changes in the same is not accepted once the application is submitted.
  • After completion of GATE 2016 examination, all answer keys will be made available for dispute within a short time. Every answer key can be challenged. A nominal fee will be levied to prevent frivolous challenges.
  • An online virtual calculator will be available to candidates at the time of examination instead of the physical calculator. Candidates can practice with the online virtual  calculator on GATE 2016 website.

(Note: Electronic diary, mobile phone, and any such electronic gadgets, blank papers, clip boards and log tables will not be allowed in the examination venue.)

How do I prepare for GATE 2016 on my own without any coaching classes?

How do I prepare for GATE 2016 on my own without any coaching classes?

Stage 1: Planning -
Put a time table for the next 6 months dedicating 2 days for each sub topic in book. By November end atleast, somehow you should have covered a major chunk of the syllabus (if not all).

Stage 2: Buying the right books and joining institutions for online tests series
  • buy MadeEasy and Gate Academy handbook for GATE ECE/EE/CS/ - This book contains formula. This book becomes very handy 1-2 months before exam, a time when you are supposed to be revising.
  • These books help you in getting vital marks via shortcuts. Read the preface of the book to understand how you can best utilize the book.
  • Join two or three online test series. This is the most important part. After attending each test, you get to know where you stand.
  • If your are a 'standard' student, then very good. If you are a 'local' student, then just back yourself to get it right studying 'local' books.

Stage 3: Execution
  • GATE is more of a problems solving oriented exam, more so with the addition of numerical answer type questions. Hence, IMO, your focus must be more on solving problems than on reading theory.
  • Even if you are not confident of solving problems, start solving the questions in Kanodia MCQ book. The book contains similar questions for same formula, which helps you kind of revise even while solving for the first time.
  • Start with solving past 2 years' (7 papers) questions from a topic you are going to study that day, just to get an idea of what to expect.
  • Maintain a notebook and note down important formulae and points and revise regularly. This is important because with the syllabus being so vast, it so happens that you wont be remembering in December much of what you studied in June or July if you don't revise.
Stage 4: Finishing
Join 2 or 3 coaching institutions' online test series. Test yourself in months of December and January irrespective of how much % of the syllabus you have covered. With each test you will always learn something new !

Stage 5: Delivering
Ultimately, it is a HUGE waste of time and energy if you do the right things for 8 or 9 months and falter in the 180 minutes that matter the most.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Since GATE is a test of your technical aptitude, ideally you should find yourself knowledgeable enough to appear in it without the need of any special preparation, after studying the subjects of your academic curriculum. However, since we all know how 'good' the Engineering education in this country actually is, you may need some dedicated preparation, which can be done on your own. I would suggest you follow the steps mentioned below.

1. Make a list of subjects that you need to study in order to be completely prepared for the exam. Have a look at some previous year question papers and prioritize the subjects which prominently feature in the question papers most of the times.

2. Pick one subject at a time, get the most recommended book on that subject, study all the topics included in the syllabus, practice numerical problems (if there are any) in parallel. If possible, make your own notes while studying, which will make it a lot easier for you to revise later. After completing a subject, pick some previous year question papers, find the questions asked on the subject you just finished and solve them. You can easily find books having previous year questions arranged according to the subject.

3. Enroll to one of the test series (conducted by an institute). After finishing all the courses, take the tests. It'll give you a better chance to evaluate yourself with all the real test conditions, e.g. time limit, negative marking, stress to deal with. It shouldn't cost you much monetarily.

4. Identify you problem areas based on the test results and work on them.

5. A few days before the exam, stop doing anything new, only revise what you've already done.

6. Before entering the examination hall, swear to god to not attempt any question that you're not sure about.

All the best ...

Zone-wise List of Cities in which GATE 2016 will be held

There are two primary choices and one secondary choice. If you choose a particular city as your first choice, then the corresponding zone to which this city belongs will appear, and you will be able to choose another city as your second choice only from this zone. These choices will be your primary choices in a specific zone. However, a third choice has also been introduced in GATE 2016, which is your secondary choice. The list of 3rd choice cities will be as specified by each zone and this will be used only when your cities of primary choice are not available. However, because of operational constraints, the GATE committee reserves the right to add a new city or remove an existing one, and allot a city that may not be any of the choices of a candidate.

Table below gives the tentative list of the cities (zone-wise) in which GATE 2016 will be held. Also shown in the table is the Zonal Offices (one of the IITs or IISc.). The Zonal Office dealing with your application will be your point of contact for any enquiries regarding your examination center and other matters.

Pattern and Design of Gate Examination 2016

Pattern of Question Papers and Marking Scheme

Pattern of Question Papers:-
In all the papers, there will be a total of 65 questions carrying 100 marks, out of which 10 questions carrying a total of 15 marks are in General Aptitude (GA).

In the papers bearing the codes AE, AG, BT, CE, CH, CS, EC, EE, IN, ME, MN, MT, PE, PI, TF and XE, the Engineering Mathematics will carry around 15% of the total marks, the General Aptitude section will carry 15% of the total marks and the remaining 70% percentage of the total marks is devoted to the subject of the paper.

In the papers bearing the codes AR, CY, EY, GG, MA, PH and XL, the General Aptitude section will carry 15% of the total marks and the remaining 85% of the total marks is devoted to the subject of the paper.
GATE 2016 would contain questions of two different types in various papers:

(i) Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ) carrying 1 or 2 marks each in all papers and sections. These questions are objective in nature, and each will have a choice of four answers, out of which the candidate has to mark the correct answer(s).

(ii) Numerical Answer Questions of 1 or 2 marks each in all papers and sections. For these questions the answer is a real number, to be entered by the candidate using the virtual keypad. No choices will be shown for this type of questions.

Design of Questions:-
The questions in a paper may be designed to test the following abilities:
(i) Recall: These are based on facts, principles, formulae or laws of the discipline of the paper. The candidate is expected to be able to obtain the answer either from his/her memory of the subject or at most from a one-line computation.
Example
Q. During machining maximum heat is produced
(A) in flank face
(B) in rake face
(C) in shear zone
(D) due to friction between chip and tool

(ii) Comprehension: These questions will test the candidate’s understanding of the basics of his/her field, by requiring him/her to draw simple conclusions from fundamental ideas.
Example
Q. A DC motor requires a starter in order to
(A) develop a starting torque
(B) compensate for auxiliary field ampere turns
(C) limit armature current at starting
(D) provide regenerative braking

(iii) Application: In these questions, the candidate is expected to apply his/her knowledge either through computation or by logical reasoning.
Example
Q. The sequent depth ratio of a hydraulic jump in a rectangular channel is 16.48. The Froude number at the beginning of the jump is:
(A) 5.0 (B) 8.0 (C) 10.0 (D) 12.0

Examples of each of this design is given in the types of questions above.
The questions based on the above logics may be a mix of single standalone statement/phrase/data type questions, combination of option codes type questions or match items type questions.

(iv) Analysis and Synthesis: In these questions, the candidate is presented with data, diagrams, images etc. that require analysis before a question can be answered. A Synthesis question might require the candidate to compare two or more pieces of information. Questions in this category could, for example, involve candidates in recognising unstated assumptions, or separating useful information from irrelevant information.

Marking Scheme:-
For 1-mark multiple-choice questions, 1/3 marks will be deducted for a wrong answer. Likewise, for 2-marks multiple-choice questions, 2/3 marks will be deducted for a wrong answer. There is no negative marking for numerical answer type questions.

General Aptitude (GA) Questions
In all papers, GA questions carry a total of 15 marks. The GA section includes 5 questions carrying 1 mark each (sub-total 5 marks) and 5 questions carrying 2 marks each (sub-total 10 marks).

Question Papers other than GG, XE and XL
These papers would contain 25 questions carrying 1 mark each (sub-total 25 marks) and 30 questions carrying 2 marks each (sub-total 60 marks). The question paper will consist of questions of multiple choice and numerical answer type. For numerical answer questions, choices will not be given. Candidates have to enter the answer (which will be a real number, signed or unsigned, e.g. 25.06, -25.06, 25, -25 etc.) using a virtual keypad. An appropriate range will be considered while evaluating the numerical answer type questions so that the candidate is not penalized due to the usual round-off errors.

GG (Geology and Geophysics) Paper
Apart from the General Aptitude (GA) section, the GG question paper consists of two parts: Part A and Part B. Part A is common for all candidates. Part B contains two sections: Section 1 (Geology) and Section 2 (Geo-physics). Candidates will have to attempt questions in Part A and either Section 1 or Section 2 in Part B.

Part A consists of 25 multiple-choice questions carrying 1-mark each (sub-total 25 marks and some of these may be numerical answer type questions). Each section in Part B (Section 1 and Section 2) consists of 30 multiple choice questions carrying 2 marks each (sub-total 60 marks and some of these may be numerical answer type questions).

XE Paper (Engineering Sciences)
In XE paper, Engineering Mathematics section (Section A) is compulsory. This section contains 11 questions carrying a total of 15 marks: 7 questions carrying 1 mark each (sub-total 7 marks), and 4 questions carrying 2 marks each (sub-total 8 marks). Some questions may be of numerical answer type questions.

Each of the other sections of the XE paper (Sections B through G) contains 22 questions carrying a total of 35 marks: 9 questions carrying 1 mark each (sub-total 9 marks) and 13 questions carrying 2 marks each (sub-total 26 marks). Some questions may be of numerical answer type.

XL Paper (Life Sciences)
In XL paper, Chemistry section (Section H) is compulsory. This section contains 15 questions carrying a total of 25 marks: 5 questions carrying 1 mark each (sub-total 5 marks) and 10 questions carrying 2-marks each (sub-total 20 marks). Some questions may be of numerical answer type.

Each of the other sections of the XL paper (Sections I through M) contains 20 questions carrying a total of 30 marks: 10 questions carrying 1 mark each (sub-total 10 marks) and 10 questions carrying 2 marks each (sub-total 20 marks). Some questions may be of numerical answer type.

Note on Negative Marking for Wrong Answers:-
For a wrong answer chosen for the multiple choice questions, there would be negative marking. For 1-mark multiple choice questions, 1/3 mark will be deducted for a wrong answer. Likewise, for 2-mark multiple choice questions, 2/3 mark will be deducted for a wrong answer. However, there is no negative marking for a wrong answer in numerical answer type questions.
